Will Submarines Become the Limos of Tomorrow?

For those that value experience and service, limos are a mode of transportation you may be familiar with. Well, now you can take to the seas in the same style that you take to the road. Underwater adventurers and travelers can cruise around in the first-ever submarine limo.

The C-Explorer 5

In the age of text messaging, when nearly every word has a shortened version, the sub’s name is catchy though a little contrived. It also calls into question, “what happened to one through four?”

Getting past the name and moving on to the exterior of the vessel we find what vaguely resembles the shape of an airboat painted fire engine red. Right away attention is drawn to the clear acrylic hull on one end that affords a 360° view once you’re underwater. On the other end are the twin thrusters that push the C-Explorer 5 through the water.

Now for the inside. Unlike other personal submarines of the past, the C-Explorer 5 offers all the luxuries of landlocked limousines. Each one comes standard with air conditioning, cush leather seating for five and an emergency life support system – just in case. You can also opt to add on:

  • An iPod controlled sound system
  • A custom cool box for your beverages
  • A tracking system
  • An HD video camera system
  • LED lighting so you can cruise around when the sun’s down.

For the more scientific types that want to do research in luxury there are additional features including:

  • Imaging Sonars
  • Manipulator Arms (these are able to reach out and grabs samples from far below the surface)
  • Underwater Modem
  • Sub-bottom Profilers

How about performance? The C-Explorer 5 can go 3 knots underwater and has the capability of diving to depths of up to 1,000 feet below the surface. Even scuba enthusiasts can get turned on by numbers like that.

The C-Explorer 5 is being touted as another kind of limo, but does it have the potential to overshadow limousines on land? One of the biggest limitations for growth is location. Unless you’re on the ocean or near some seriously large lakes the C-Explorer 5 isn’t an option. Here you’ll have to get around via a traditional Austin limo company.

Currently, the C-Explorer 5 is being marketed to yacht owners that want to impress their wealthy friends and travel businesses on the coast that see the tourism potential of chauffeuring people around underwater.
